I just wrapped up a busy stretch and did something today I’ve never done since moving to the farm - I chose to spoil myself instead of tackling the ever-growing list of groundskeeping chores.
This summer’s weather has been wild - more rain than I can remember in years. And when it’s not raining, the grass is still too wet to mow. Yesterday, though, it was perfect mowing weather….. instead of jumping into work mode though, I made a different choice - a real Sunday sabbath.
The day started slow - coffee and good conversation with a friend, then a visit to one of my regular clients (a sweet dog I see seven days a week and don’t even really count as work). After that, I came home, looked at the mower… and then sank into the couch with Poptart. The sun was out, the breeze was warm, and the pull of a poolside afternoon was stronger than any sense of duty. So I texted the same coffee-date friend “do ya wanna pool?”…
Cut to: poolside beer, really great tunes, a little mermaid time (usually a good hour of floating), followed by a nap in the sun-kissed chair. I caught up with my sister on the phone and after a bit more sun, it was decided that Chinese takeout was the perfect ending to a perfectly indulgent day….
After a full belly, I came home, knocked out the essential farm chores, walked the pups, and fell into bed where I drifted off in an instant.
This morning I’m back to coffee and weather apps - it’s looking like a good day to hike with dogs then tackle that overgrown grass. But here’s the thing: in this new season of life, learning to balance all of life’s obligations and learning to balance relationships - including the one I have with myself, have been both monumental and long overdue. So… we’ll see if the grass gets mowed or if I need to spoil myself a little more and hire someone to help me play catchup with the grounds later…
