apparently this is how I ring in the new year…

Welp, I did it my way…
As planned, yesterday - New Year’s Eve - I came home from a full morning of dog hikes, finished cleaning the house (including a solid purge of clothes and shoes that made their way to Goodwill), and swept and vacuumed until the place felt almost ceremonial.

I had glorious intentions to watch the ball drop on TV with my little two-foot tabletop Christmas tree glowing on the kitchen table in the background... I took Reece and Poptart out for one last walk around 10:30 before the fireworks started, then crawled into bed to cuddle up with Poptart… just for a few minutes.

As I lay there fighting sleep, I figured with all the rednecks out here and the money they tend to spend on fireworks and tannerite, surely the dogs would wake me when midnight hit.
Wrong.
We slept like babies. Straight through midnight. Right into 2026. Never heard a thing.
And honestly, it was perfect.

This morning was good in a quiet, but steady way. I woke up around 6:40 without an alarm, made coffee, walked the dogs, and headed out for one dog-walking appointment before lunch.

Then I had a wonderful New Year’s Day surprise visit from a few gal pals. We had celebratory giant glasses of bubbly to ring in the new year out in the front yard. It was the perfect way to start the year - good conversations, perfect weather, and the best company.
The weather is finally turning nice after a week of arctic temps and wind, and Reece was thrilled to spend the day outside with Ellen. Ever since that friendship formed, they both seem genuinely depressed when the weather won’t allow them hours together. I hate not letting him out, but even in his sweater, I’ll find him shivering in Ellen’s little lean-to, the hammock, or his outdoor field bed. He fights me every time I bring him in, but I can’t leave him out there cold even thought he swears he ca handle it…
Thankfully, we’ve got a week or two of spring-like temperatures ahead, and I’m taking full advantage, planning to stick close to the house most afternoons so he can soak up every bit of sun with his best goat friend.

I also had the most delicious little traditional New Year’s meal - well, traditional with my own spin, because I want to actually like what I’m making for myself. Black-eyed peas, Brussels sprouts, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, and cornbread.

It was a perfect day indeed.
It felt damn good to wake up on the first day of the year in a clean, organized house. Not a single dish in the sink. Not one leaf or stray piece of hay on the floor - which, if you know farm life, is saying something. Nothing demanding my attention. Nothing overdue.

I’m excited to be writing here more regularly again, and excited to bring back some familiar segments in 2026.

Happy New Year, all you amazing lovelies. I am heading to bed at a very reasonable time ;)
