Ok, ok.. I haven’t had much to say the last week or so. For starters, it has been wet, rainy, and cold… and although I absolutely love what I do, I work outside in the elements and the forecast last weekend called for sun and temps in the 60s so I’m feeling a little disappointed.
My last post was just photos and gahhhh were they beautiful?? But the truth is, as beautiful as the snow was, and as much as my inner child wanted it and had me giddy and begging for it, after about 8 hours of it, I was already over it.
Last weekend we got 7” of the white powdery stuff. So powdery you couldn’t even make snowballs or a snowman out of it. And it was so cold… the child in me allows the excitement of the possibility of snow to overpower the reality of all the extra work it creates for me… It takes so much to make sure the animals are comfortable. Ellen used to love it, but now in her very old age, she has a hard time being out in it. So extra bedding for her as well as having to haul all her food and water to her because she doesn’t even want to leave her cozy little place. So I’m a slippin and a slidin’ all over the place carrying buckets of water, her special senior feed, hay, and fresh bedding. Those are the things I don’t post on social media - ha!
Then there are the horses. They simply refused to go into their stalls and they will not wear a blanket. With snow, it’s not so bad, but when we have ice, I have to do a LOT of coaxing. Carrying buckets of their senior feed, hay, and making it seem like it’s all SOOOOO DELICIOUS so they will be curious enough to come inside. Yes, quite the performance.
So there is my little bitchfest about the snow in this little town called Winterville.
The pros were as follows:
As far as the dogs go, they couldn’t be happier. This experience alone almost cancels out the dread. I mean they LOVE it.
I came home Friday from hikes with dogs and did not leave my property until Tuesday. This is basically an anomaly. I have maintained one client that I regularly walk on weekends, but may take off one weekend a month now that I have the taste of truly being a homebody for a whole weekend. I imagine the benefit of not leaving the farm on a weekend when I can actually enjoy myself out here will be the bees knees for sure!
Poptart unfortunately starts to get a little too needy when I’ve had more than three days home and then go back to work. She settles in nicely in hermit mode with me - that’s my girl…
The wood stove kept us toasty throughout the snow and the power never even flickered (but I was ready with my gas grill with burner, power bank, and ready to heat and eat meals).
All and all the majority of the time I was warm and enjoying myself, but the many outings and back and forths to the horses and goat and keeping the ducks happy in the barn was very taxing and took a long time to recover from because it was the kind of cold that lingered for hours.
And already the forecast is saying we will get a third round in a week or so and I am crossing everything hoping they are wrong this time. I am ready for an early spring.
It’s Friday, I’m ready for a weekend of sun and temps in the 50s, the Super Bowl, and maybe a little reclaiming of some land out here that I purposefully chose not to keep up after Joro season started last year…
xo all you lovelies…
